Not particularly interesting - it seemed to be intentionally confusing. I take it Letters from Iwo Jima is better.

Saying this movie sucked is a compliment. The acting is horrible, the plot is weak, the editing is brutal. Save your money do not even rent this propaganda film it's the worst movie made in a very long time. Do not even watch it if you can see it for free, spend your time doing something more productive like sleeping or watching clouds move in the sky.

I thought this movie was really good, but I was expecting more war scenes, most of it takes place in the USA. I think it could have been half an hour shorter and we would have gotten the point, but good story!!

For those of you who think that this was the worst ww2 movie they ever saw. Well you haven't seen the crap John Wayne starred in. They've made alot of ww2 movies that were all about propaganda and this wasn't one of them. Here we have a gang of young folks criticizing the authenticity of a war movie and a generation that they've never experienced for themselves. Yes the movie isn't an actual portrayal however, many of those actors were thinking and living what I was living through. So have some respect for us veterans.

Beautifully shot. Incredibly directed. The most ineteresting thing is that I've seen that picture a million times but never really took the time to understand the history behind it. Thank you Mr Eastwood for that. It really is interesting how clint found an original way to discuss a topic that's been on the screen for decades. After seeing this movie, I will definitely go and see Letters from Iwo Jima, which is the more acclaimed of the duo.

Now that is an American movie thru to the core. Everything human and wrong with patriotism, phony hero worship and commercialism. Witness lies, showbiz politics, stereo-typical sales guys trying to take advantage of veterans, and honest to goodness American Racism all in a war film about the real war at home and the hypocrisies and darkness of patriotism. If you are expecting John Wayne go to a different predictable war film. Comments I have read about the historical inaccuracies are evidence that some don't understand the movie in the least. It is not about history. It is about the fact that there are all kinds of stories about war, some good, some bad and some just plain B. S.

As a history buff I search out these movies. This one was well worth it! The Island cinematography is breathtaking, and a great story. Mostly accurate was appreciated. Adam Beach was incredible. The movie is charged with emotion, lots of survivors guilt and hero denial.

The poorest movie you could see, it is not based on any historical fact, and does not bring out the true american pride and attitude that americans hold. It is one film makers made up fantasy of what he thinks these men really thought nd not one word came from the men that died and put that flag up. Please do not be fooled and feel some false sense of attachment that you might see this movie and feel the pains and sufferings theses men felt. As a made up war fantasy it is boring and not much action after these men are thrown into the campaigne to make money so they can supposedly go off back to the war and blast more bad guys. I give this movie a 1 but really there is not a negative number low enough to rate this movie so take my one and a negitive infinity. To the makers of this move do your self a favor and sell the movie DVD's as coasters for coffee tables, 5.00 should be the price as if you bought this movie for your collection after watching it once you would only get that muchas trade in price.

You might have the sense that Flags of Our Fathers is a gung-ho American war movie designed to rally support for the country's current unpopular misadventure in Iraq. But that's not the case at all. While the film is highly compassionate towards the plight and courage of soldiers, it is a scathing and mournful critique of how they are treated by those in power and then forgotten by their country once the war is over. It is about the real men behind the heroic images of soldiers used to promote the war, about their families, their experiences, their suffering and what happens to them once the war ends. It shows how soldiers are used for the interests of others and how their own needs get neglected. Visually, the film is beautifully shot and painstakingly detailed. It's not for the squeamish, though. The battle scenes are graphic. When the actual historic photographs from Iwo Jima are shown at the end of the film, you really come to appreciate how accurately the battle has been portrayed. The three leads all give very strong performances, especially Adam Beach as Ira Hayes, who has the most trouble coping with what he has been through and whose treatment is truly a national disgrace.

Trite, blatant, war mongoring, american propaganda, with pretty lighting.

Most war movies show the 'blood & guts' of conflict. This one also shows the mental attitude of the average Americans living at that time. This movie represents the first positive feelings the people had that they may be winning the war. A good film on why Morale is so important during time of war.

Typical American propaganda. Both times when the flag goes up you get the cute melodramatic music; go figure. When an American soldier dies, he dies in a dramatic way to bolster emotions. When a Jap dies, he goes out quickly, without a story. Some scenes seemed too artificially crafted, too much lighting and too clean an environment. The fighting scenes are good and too is the acting. All in all, a good rental.

Great movie. I predict an Academy award nomination and win for Adam Beach in this role. This is based on a true story and Adam Beach has become Oscar material in this role in my opinion.

Respecting those who fought and died in the war is important, learning some of the factual info was great the cinematography was very good. But some of the stereotypes left a lot to be desired. For instance how only the First Nation fellow became an alcoholic, curious how it didn't affect the other fellows that way. Way to go Mr Eastwood, you didnt "make my day." it seemed to reinforce the drunken Indian stigma. The fame searching wife was another stereotype that left a bad taste afterwords and I'm a guy. It was a surprise to learn that not even the police dept wanted former war heros, I thought they took anyone even those with a questionable past. I suppose someone knew the affects of PTSD.

This movie could have really tanked quickly, but it doesnt. It actually gives a feel of realism in the characters that is usually lacking from most war pictures. Perhaps it should have beeen called the ballad of ira hayes. Adam Beach is very engrossing and is really growing as an actor. A solid movie, but not a classic.

This was a movie to make you think. What it means to go to war. What it means to be labelled a "hero". What it means to be thrust onto a pedestal and become a role model even though you're note sure you should be there. For those who gave this movie a low rating... think again. For those who haven't seen it, go... and make your own judgement.

What a disappointment; clint eastwood should be embarrased by this aimless, wandering poorly written script that is such a let down compared to his recent work... would have walked out but did not want to insult my freind dave... what a waste of money and celluloid this was!!!

Overall, it was a good movie, however I expected more of a "Saving Pvt Ryan" plotline rather than canvassing for money to support the war effort...

This was a typical war movie. I thought the war scenes were a bit too long and drawn out. The storyline was a good one that held my interest.

Good story, lousy delivery. Did not enjoy how the plot was moved along or especially how the characters were developed. Would have walked out excpet for the compelling storyline Would not have gone based on the reviews I read, but stuck with it because of Clint Eastwood..

This is a very interesting movie about memories, what makes you a hero or not, war propaganda, inter generational links. I doubt this film will be a hit in US.

Brilliant movie. Stayed true to historical fact. You need to stay focused on the storyline. It is not a movie for people who want to spoon fed a war movie to be entertained. It will definatley tug at your heart.

A poor movie. It wanders around aimlessly and tries to be something, I don't know what. I expect better from Eastwood.

Everything very accurately portrayed. Very disturbing war scenes, but that is what they were trying to do. Excellent movie, and I agree it should be shown to school kids every Nov 11. One misfact though Ira Hayes died in a ditch in 2 inches of water (according to Johnny Cash, and I always believe what he sings) I'm going to see it again and get the dvd when it comes out!

Honestly... it's a story that people should know. But I would much rather have saved the money and seen it as a 'made for TV' movie.

For a student concentrating on history, this movie was very insightful. It gives an understanding of the soldiers and their feelings of what was happening around them. Also it shows war in a different perspective but portraying the political aspect and the patriotism within the country. Very knowledgable and heartfelt.

To be honest, after reading some of these reviews I wasn't going to see the movie in the theater. I am very glad I did. It was excellent! This film however will not appeal to the younger crowd, as it was not a glamor film obout war and did not follow the lead charactor through unrealistic and impossible battle scenes. Instead this film is an intellectual journey into the human side of war, both on and off the battle field. I beleive this film is as realistic as you can possibly get. There is nothing glamorous about death or killing, and this film shows that. This film will probably not apeal to kids under 20. Although this film should be shown in schools and the kids made to discuss it. Thank a veteran for your freedom.

In my opinion this film is simply too long for no reason. Many scenes and situations are repeated and some of the effect and involvment fizzles out. The actors also seem a bit too detached or aloof (poor direction? ) particularly Ryan Philippe who seems to be walking through in a daze. Music is simply archaic and soap-opera like. Many cardboard characters... a mean geberal, a ditsy fiancee, a hokum recruit, the cruel japanese, etc. These simplified incarnations worked for Eastwood in $$$Baby and the Unforgiven, falls flat here. But I still think a very good film lies beneath, nothing a sharp pair of scissors couldn't fix. What is stunning is the journey to and the subsequent battle of Iwo Jima. Magnificent cinematography and pacing in these scenes.

While the movie does an accurate job of portraying the "Hell on Earth" of Iwo Jima, the characters seem very two-dimensional. Too much effort spent on the action and not enough on character development.
