Unexciting movie, bland story but well played by Tim Allen. Do not even rent.

A brilliant movie. A bit like "Million Dollar Baby", it's not really a fight movie - the story is much more complex, the moral issues deep and complex. The acting is amazing! It's sad that this movie doesn't have more visibility.

Great story and the acting blew me away. I was surprised it did not get more exposure in the media.

Very touching. The conflict is between integrity and money. Tough on both sides. Brilliantly well done.

This movie was the worst I have seen I think in my whole life. The acting was terrible and the plot sucked.

A truly great movie about the spirit of martial arts. This is not your typical action movie though... beware. A must see, if you are intrigued about this sport.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is amazing as is the script, direction, and story. Tim Allen is a surprise in a dramatic role. Well done.

Slow and blurry beginning... After 30mn, my friend and I were still trying to figure out the main idea of this movie. Then things started to make sense, only to see the movie coming to an abrupt end: it was so frustrating. Weird characters and poor acting of the cast, except the lead actor: Chiwetel Ejiofor. It seems that he carried the whole film alone and that the other actors were there to make his performance shine through. I am very disappointed.

This was neither an action film or a thriller, it was lost somewhere in between. The dialogue was painful, the plot tired and cliche, and the action laughable. Give this a pass.

More interesting than entertaining, but definitely a good blend of both.

I really enjoyed this MMA movie. Instead of focusing on combat scenes, it was way deeper than i thought. Great movie!

This wasn't a bad movie. But it most definitely could have been much better. For ratings sake, I will settle on a 5, due especially to the lead actor's great performance. He's the only reason I did not completely tune out. Don't go into this movie expecting a lot of fight scenes or even a lot of actual competition scenes. It's not about that. It is more focused on developing the moralistic tale, which it does awkwardly. I was even a little confused at times as to the sudden jumps the story took, without really bridging the gaps. Bad editing? Flawed directing? Faulty writing? With a seasoned veteran such as David Mammet at the helm, that's hard to believe, but there is undeniably a lack of consistency and punch to this story. And the ending... gauging the people's reaction in the theatre, the ending was definitely not satisfactory. Overall, this movie is so, so, worth it if you don't pay, but even then, you may very well be disappointed. Too bad, it had a lot of promise, and the final product diminishes the great performance by the lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.

It was a really smart martial arts movie! Great:) Tim Allen is decent in this movie, I suggest watching it for yourself before listening to the "official" reviews out there!

This movie has a good message but delivered a bit more subtle than usual. It was not filmed in the most typical way nor is the message simply laid out for kids to understand. It won't win any Oscar as the scenario could have been thought a bit more thoroughly. It's theme is based around martial arts but there is actually very little combat and it deals more with day to day life an individual has to go trough and the usual battle we face with our principles. All in all, it’s worth seeing if you want something different.

WOW!!! I gotta say WOW!!! In terms of impact, this movie hit me more powerfully than anything I have watched in years. I suppose you could look at some of the structural elements as contrived or cliche, but at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself how you felt about it and I was floored. The film seems designed to appeal to no one. Mamet's fans will resist the topic and Martial Arts fans will resist the Mamet. I happen to be one of those people who appreciate both, so my opinion may be useless to other readers this time. But I thought that the humility and understatement of the main character captivating. I also thought that some of the moral dynamics compelling. And I thought Randy Couture's presence did a lot for the films credibility, particularly his ear. I'm loooking forward to other reviews of this one. The guy who gave it a 3 seems to have been looking for martial arts. I'm wondering what people looking for Mamet will say. Finally, the comments about the inferior quality of the fighting -- I've gotta say something about that. Mamet WANTS to suppress that dimension of the film because he does not want his audience to succumb to gratuitous violence as the meaning of the text. By diminishing the sensationalism, he forces the viewer into an intellectual relationship with the text. This understatement become even more central in the last fight scene, which is done without sound and largely in the mode of aesthetic poetry. On the one hand, the formal elements can be explained in the they were both BJJ guys, but the silence and the limited audience centrality gave the scene a sacred quality, much like the silent slaying of the cow in Apocalypse Now. In this way, Mamet was trying to gather his audience into a sacred experience, which is precisely the opposite of what they were expecting to see, both the fams at the arena and the fans in the movie theater. By reintroducing the sacred to the event, he touches the core of the martial arts traditions and reveals the reason they are rightfully called arts. I was deeply moved by this movie.

The movie did not lead live up to the trailer, I was very disappointed in the story line. Very slow moving movie, very little action leading up to one climax which was not worth sitting for over an hour to see.

I've been involved in martial arts for 40 years and this is about as pityful as you can get. No story, no connection, no action. The main character although an excellenet actor is asked to play a master but the character has no concept of real bushido. I wouldn't recommend even renting this piece...

Despite a promising cast this movie was a disaster. This was Hollywood at its worst, trying to glorify a man and his virtues and trying to do so with cheesy conflict, empty character/relationship development and plot twists built around an uninteresting plot. There weren't even any engaging or fun fight scenes to make up for this garbage. I want my money back.

Wow this was a bad movie. Very little BJJ in it, and bad quality. I appreciate a movie with a good message, but this was just poorly done.
