Bad. Bad. And bad. I knew it was going to be one of those mindless teenager flicks that they make these days. But I thought I'd give it a try anyways - very disappointing. I'm sure the book makes more sense so I'm going to read that. I want this one torn apart in a parody movie. To think they wasted all that tequila when they could have used it as fuel to burn the plants that were trying to eat them! Ridiculous.

Good Entertainment, Idea of the subject of horror is a good one. No Oscar winning movie, but really frightening and surprising at moments. Cool for a evening hour.

This one isn't even close to being the movie I expected after seeing the previews. I was disappointed to find out the ruins were merely a home to man eating vegetation that could mimic sounds. I wasn't impressed to say the least. I didn't expect much from the cast as I rarely do when it comes to horror type films. I did, however, expect a somewhat better storyline.

This movie was original, funny, interesting, heartbreaking, scary and thrilling. I enjoyed it, and the acting was great. I would recommend it as a film. No complaints here. Well, one. The ending did not give the viewers any closure or any answers, but the same can be said of most horror films.

Pretty minimal plot with a bunch of gross out scenes. It moved along pretty well and never seemed boring.

Yeh its obvious and typical. But I liked the actors, and there were some disgusting and disturbing scenes. Theres nothing new out anymore, so just enjoy what they're remaking. Worth seeing if its cheapie night or you don't pay I guess.

The script was just so terrible that I couldn't identify with any of the protagonists. I'm usually all about the gore in these movies too but this was just excessive in the bad kind of gore. Good gore = the kind that creeps you out. Bad gore = just buckets of blood that makes your stomach turn. But yeah, for the first half-hour, you can't tell this film apart at all from Turistas or Hostel. They all start the exact same way! SO LAME. That Jenna Malone girl is kinda cute but I was so hoping she was Kristen Stewart in just about every single scene. Moral of the story: If you're going to vacation in Mexico... bring lots of weapons? Not recommended at all.

In this day and age of high technology, it is refreshing to see a movie that dares not to rely extensively on special effects. Excellent cinematography. Good suspense. A vivid depiction of how regular joe shmoes having it all too good in life can just step into being at the wrong place at the wrong time. A clash between superstitious unexplainable natural phenomena and high tech benificiaries of the planet that take it for granted. Good acting. I recommend this movie to those that enjoyed the Blair Witch Project. 4.

This was such a different take on a "horror" movie. At times I found it kind of slow, but I think it was a job well done for the most part. Acting was good enough (not great, but good), scenery was perfect, and the script and plot were standard grade for a horror flick. I would recommend it to those who like movies that are out of the norm.

To say I was disappointed with this movie would be an understatement. They say that looks can be deceiving, and the previews for this picture were certainly that. I think it was just one of the most ridiculous films I have seen in a long time. Not only that, but the storyline itself was somewhat outlandish and a bit out there. Come on now, fighting off crazy Mayans, and vegetation that takes over the lives of five college preppies, and is hungry for human flesh? What next? Also, another thing I didn't like about this movie was how some things weren't clearly explained, and left you hanging, thinking "Huh". In fact I'm still trying to understand what the connection between the plants and the ruins were. What did it all mean? Aside from that I found the acting was mediocre, could of been a little better. The gory scenes however, were few, but they made me flinch, and once I had to look away. This movie was hardly what I'd call scary. There were a few tense moments, but nothing to really make you jump out of your seat. Though not all was a loss. The only thing that I thought which made this film stand out, and gave it the edge it needed, was the incredible scenery... the landscape which was breathtaking. Overall," The Ruins", is one movie that I wouldn't rush out to see, although I wonder if the book is any better. Perhaps I'll read it sometime for curiosity's sake. Enough said.

Oh dear. Not a good movie by a long shot. If the villagers really didn't want people going to the pyramid they could have simply put someone on watch every day/night to ward off visitors. I guess you wouldn't have a movie then though! Good make up effects for the wounds on the characters but not an original thought to be seen. I hated every character and after 30 mins of the movie I wanted them all to die! The X-files did something like this in season 4 or 5 I think with an underground carnivorous fungus; in addition Cabin Fever by Eli Roth (an awful movie too) is quite similar to this as well. Think Little Shop of Horrors (minus the comedy and singing) meets Cabin Fever on a Mayan pyramid and thats what this movie is. Wouldn't even recommend renting it.

This was an Awesome movie... Don't believe the reviews that say it's bad, cause really- they don't know what they are talking about or they are way to critical. This movie was great good plot (for the most part, yes 20 minutes into it the scene stayed the same for the rest of the movie, but still good story) The ending was good and left me questioning.

I had not read the book, however perhaps I should have then I may have been prepared for what I was getting into. This seemed like it was going to be a genuinely frightening movie, but it was quite dull to be honest. There was not a single moment through this film I felt into the story or even frightened for that matter. It seemed like the inevitable death of some lost teenagers which is an already overused premise in so many movies. Although it is interesting to see an untraditional sort of "creatures" frightening is the last thing I thought of when they actually reveal what was killing them. If you want a good horror movie that actually seems to go somewhere, look somewhere else.

I’ve never felt the need to comment about a movie until this one, let me tell you why. As I sat there watching its plot disappointingly unraveled, and listening to the words being spoken by the characters, I thought to myself, there couldn’t have been more than one mindless screen writer working on this because if anyone else read this script, they would have burned every last page and slapped the writer across the face for being so useless, and probably recommend he gets a job bringing the good writers some coffee. Through some googling I discovered that this disappointment of a movie was given man birth originally as a novel by Scott B. Smith. I haven’t read the novel so I cannot comment on it, however if the movie being written by the same writer as the novel is of any indication, I’d rather the paper being used to print the book be used to wipe my behind with after I discarded the waist contents of which I ate, while watching this movie. This movie is so horrible I actually felt like somebody should be paying me to sit there and watch it. If anything good comes from this movie it’s a better appreciation of good screen writing and film making, because without bad movies like this one, the good ones wouldn’t look as good as they do. Don’t waist your time with this one, not entertaining in any way, unless a few scenes with pointless gore and special effects is your cup of tea, and if that’s the case you deserve to waist $10 and 91 minutes of your life.

Ok, the only reason people rate it so low is because they don't follow the movie. It has happened to me at least 5 times, where I don't like the beginning and I laugh till the movie ends. Don't listen to the people that give it bad ratings, because they obviously don't watch enough movies to choose what it good and what is bad.

Not your traditional horror movie, a great and untold story that offers a great sense of realism with a strong and talented cast of actors who's work is yet to be acknowledge in the industry. I Recommend this movie to anyone who has any type of historical interest in mayan cultural mysteries and belief systems, also recommend this movie to those who have a deeper understanding of what a real horror film should be about in a tasteful and sensible manner.

Interesting spin on the typical "monster" of horror movie. The acting was solid by all of the cast. Original story line, would have been a better movie if they went further into the temple or had to defend themselves from it. I had mixed expectations about the movie, but as a horror fan, I wasn't completely disappointed, but they could have "spiced" it up with a little more action than just more situational drama.

Will this 'ruin' two hours of your life? Well, it started out pretty good, typical plot of unsuspecting college types out for an adventure. Then they get stuck on that rock with all the vines and the plot just comes to a grinding halt. I mean it was just situational drama from there. They start dying off (of course) and there is lots of screaming and blood. What 'ruined' it for me was, it just wasn't scary. I mean vines that grab you and flowers that can imitate sounds aren’t very scary! What point were they trying to make with the ending, chivalry is not dead? Stay home and weed out the garden.

Having read and enjoyed the book I was really looking forward to this film. What a disappointment! The movie left out everything that made the book suspenseful and mysterious, retaining only the gore - which was presented in typically graphic Hollywood style. Stay away from this film.

This movie isn't scary... at all, people in the theatre were laughing (me included) at some parts, the acting was pretty decent but the script was weak and the monster wasn't anywhere near scary. The gory bits are not stomach churning, trust me, I didn't look away and was happily munching on my popcorn... and I didn't miss a bite. Plus why did amy survive? One of the reasons I stuck around until the end was to see her die... and she ends up living... and contaminating the rest of the world apparently since she has some of the plants particles on her clothes. I didn't like the ending because it's an open-ended ending which leaves the potential of a part 2... now THAT is a scary thought. All in all, this is not a scary movie but it's not the worst movie I've seen this year... I'm going to read the book because, if told properly, the story has potential to be at least interesting.

If you read the book, you will most probably not enjoy the movie. The book creates an amazing setting and really moves forward in a logical and explained fashion. The movie obviously had to cut back on a lot of those details and explanations. But in the end, I think some of the omissions really hurt the movie. I was going to give this one a 6/10, but I just can't. A 6/10 is not bad, and this movie was more like a so so! It is gruesome, so they definitely stuck with to that part of the book. But too many things remained unexplained or not well explained, so you end up wondering "why did he do that? " or "how would he know that? ", or even "how did they get to that conclusion so fast? " The acting is good. Kudos to Jonathan Tucker (of The Black Donnellys fame) for a great turn. We need to see more of this young actor. Jena Malone also does a good job in a kind of movie she is not known for playing in (horror) Sure, reading an excellent book is always better and more satisfying that seeing the movie they make of that book, but it doesn't mean that the movie has to be bad. There have been some great big screen adaptations, such as The Green Mile, Misery, Mystic River, and Gone Baby Gone. And don't think that my enjoyment was affected by having my expectations too high. I lowered them big time. And still, I found that a lot of storyline elements were just thrown in there without adequate setup. Imagine a viewer that had not read the book and benefited from some of that added detail in the book... 5/10 so so, worth it if you don't pay. And I'm sticking to that rating.

I liked it - movies are never as good as books, obviously, but they did a pretty good job with character development. The only part that I didn't agree with was the ending - no one "got away" in the book and that was the whole point of what the Mayans were doing there, keeping them and anyone else who got exposed, captive and quarantined from the rest of the world - at any cost. So, did Amy expose the deadly vine then to the rest of the world? All in all an entertaining movie though, despite changing the ending...

Overall the movie was good. Different type of "monster". I was entertained throughout the film. The ending could have been better, but how many movies have you seen and said that. Quite a good movie! It was original, different from other horror movies. And the truth of the matter is, there IS a big of reality in the movie. Ever heard of carnivorous plants? Well they do exists, especially in tropical forests and some are really big and can eat up quite a big prey! This movie is worth seeing, you won't regret it! Trust me, I am a horror lover! And the acting was pretty good! Good job! Enjoy the movie!

I liked that the choices the characters made, that lead them into their nasty situation, are fairly believable. You don't get to see that often. On the other hand, there were also some not so believable graphic moments. Screaming red things (I don't want to spoil it, you'll know if you see the movie) Still, I was scared. If you're looking for blood, this movie doesn't disappoint. Not for the faint of heart...

If you compare it to other horror movies, this one is one of the best in a very long time! I don't like that ghost-crap so I really enjoyed this one. There is a lot of gore and blood but the acting is surprisingly very good. It's kind of like "Turistas" with a better cast.
