Very good movie. Very similar to the show. Jonny Depp played a perfect Sweeney.

I don't even like musicals, but for some reason this one was bearable. Johnny Depp's acting was superb, as usual and I really enjoyed the dark theme of the movie. Musicals are usually too corny for me, but this was just a little bit different that it kept me entertained. The songs were even catchy! Even my husband didn't mind it, and it sure made us want to sing in the show's style for a few hours.

I was expecting more, didn't really seem to click with me for some reason. Good singing performances by the leads, some gore was exaggerated for the sake of gore, IMO. Did not seem to be much of a story. I need to let it rest and watch it again in a month or so to see if I missed something in all the hype.

I enjoyed this movie a lot! The acting, especially by Johnny, was excellent and the musical segments were well made as well. My only real gripe was it was a bit predictable, and the amount of blood made me cringe a bit. Even with those unfortunates, though, it was a good, solid movie.

Amazing movie. The best I have ever seen in my life. I could watch it over and over and over again.

It was very good. I greatly enjoyed the singing and the small bits of humor. My only two complains were that the blood looked more like melted goo than blood and the ending was so sudden. In the end, nothing wrapped up. The ending sucked and so did the blood. I still give this a 10 though because the rest of the movie made me forget these two small faults. I didn't actually find it to be all that scary.

I LOVED IT!!! It even had some humour in it. Johnny Depp is actually a pretty good singer. The only problem is that the blood looks SO FAKE.

I thought this movie was dull and I wish someone told me that it was a musical. Johnny is the best and he was the only thing that made it worth sitting through. It was predictable the whole way through and very dark. I did not enjoy this and wouldn't even rent it.

First off, the movie is not a "horror" movie per say; it is a motion picture adaption of a stage musical. If you don't want "horror" in the tradition sense (ie Texas Chainsaw, Nightmare on Elm Street) it is sure to be a movie you'll enjoy. As the blood is not necessarily "life like" color but rather a fire engine red, there is no need to be stomach sick on some of the more grotesque scenes. I myself hate tradition horror movie, but found this one rather amusing and enjoyable. The movie does take a rather strange turn at the end and could possibly make you wonder: who is the real demon of Fleet Street? You may even feel some sadness for Sweeney Todd. A remarkable performance by Mr. Depp, again, as so deserving of an Academy Award nomination. Helena Bonham Carter did play a very quirky part and as a viewer you do, at one point feel that she is trying to be a mothering figure, but hence that is quickly dispelled viewers come to view that she is truly delusional. Her voice, however, did not hold strength to Mr. Depp. Several times when they were required to duet she did seem to drown out. All in all a very well produced movie. I'm sure this movie will be added to our home collection when it arrives on DVD. A good date movie, or with the girls or just by yourself. If you don't are not familiar with musical productions and don't know what to expect, this would be a good place to start.

The only reason my rating is so high as a 9 is because of Johnny Depp. I love Helena Bonham Carter as well but there were times were her voice was uh, not my favourite. I try to avoid musicals and generally hate them but this was good, I really liked it. =D.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Sweeney Todd was amazing. Johnny Depp can actually sing, along with the rest of the cast. There are huge Johnny Depp fans that have seen this movie and absolutely hated it, but after I saw Sweeney, I got a little hooked on Depp myself. But it's not all about Depp. The Mrs. Lovett character had an amazing actress portray her, and Alan Rickman did complete justice to Judge Turpin. Sure, the blood was fake and there was lots of it, but it was fine just the same. One of the only things they could have done better was the final scene when Mrs. Lovett (SPOILER?) gets thrown into the oven stove thingy. Her scream could have had more 'OMG I'm dying! ' to it. Also, the music was amazing. Sixteenth note triplets are always awesome. If played right. Which they were.

Good acting, but terrible content! I think there is way too much graphic killing, and blood shooting out of necks. They could have made their point without it.

Sondheim, Depp and Burton, who could ask for anything more! A brilliantly filmed and sung masterpiece, translating Sondheim's Broadway show for the screen. Sometimes a little unnecessary blood but this is Burton after all. Someone commented to me that Helena Bonham-Carter looked like a punk with her lace dress on - and indeed it would be hard to fill Angela Lansbury's shoes as hers was the definitive Mrs. Lovatt, but Helena Bonham-Carter did a good job. Really liked hearing all the music again and seeing it darkly on screen.

A positive review of this film seems almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy, because who would go to see a Tim Burton movie who doesn't expect this Edward Scissorhandian dark mood. Thus, some of the reviewers surprise me - what world do you live in? I was very impressed by the acting - it's hard to imagine Johnny Depp with a smile on his face after watching the movie. Helena Bonham Carter was, as always, truly fabulous, and Sacha Baron Cohen did enough, but not too much, of his Borat routine to impress.

The actors, specially Johnny, were great. I liked the songs and the story. But there are some scenes which I think it was better not be shown in such great detail. :)

I find it understandable that some people go in to this movie not knowing what to expect and completely hate it and walk out. I knew exactly what I was going to see, and I found it very enjoyable with some memorable songs and dark humor that made it more than worth my time and money.

I'm shaking my Head at some of these reviews. I think that if you went to see it knowing that it was the movie version of the stage play - (kinda like Chicago) rather than a conventional movie musical you ended up liking it better. A great movie for theater lovers.

I must admit I chuckled aloud at the sight of several "thuggish" looking boys leaving the theatre after realizing this movie is a MUSICAL, NOT a horror flick! Johnny Depp has a great voice and the young talent in the movie did a fantastic job at tackling Sondheim's fabulous piece. The only let-down was the relative meekness of Helena Bonham-Carter's voice. She did lend a wonderful quirky neediness to Mrs. Lovett's character, but her voice was just too weak for the part. But great effort! I saw this movie twice and I'll be sure to buy it on DVD. Tim Burton outdid himself this time I think!

Stupid- trash- boring, bad music score, story line retarted, Depp rich but still plain Jonnie in makeup. Oscar for acting must be pay off involved. Most of the diginal background work left over from other Burton movies-outdated. Cast: none added up to a row of beans... avoid or waste your money it's your choice.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] The last time I saw a good movie starring Johnny Depp was «Chocolat», and he had a very minor role therein. It is very rare that I walk out of a movie theatre, it's only my second time after «Veer-Zaara», but after a little more than an hour I abandoned this song & crap. There singing almost 90%+ of the time... come on. I don’t mind a musical now and then, but I also would like a movie with it! There is some artistic value to it and I can’t say it was badly acted, but it ends there. If you need a sleep aid, go see.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I really enjoyed this movie. The quick quiet slitting of throats was a welcome change from the high-speed crashes and machine-gun massacres of so many current trillers. The film wasn't run at high speed and the volume level wasn't overloud. I found the disposal of the corpses quite [...], as well as the rats and cockroaches. This is a unique musical and I hope that it will be treated as a classic in the future. It thoroughly entertained me! My only complaint was that I found the lighting too dark to appreciate the setting of old world England.

Johnny Depp as always brilliant! Great movie and I loved it. Pleasure to watch. Do not go expecting to see a scare-flick or drama. This is truly a unique classic-to-be piece.

It was a little slow in the beginning, but as always, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter drew in the audience by the end. A great mix of humour and gore.

I have read most of the other submitted reviews and despair at the ignorance of people who do not have a clue what they are going to see. Film going is reasonably expensive nowadays and it is relatively easy to research what you are planning to see (ie. This website) Stephen Sondheim, while not everyone's cup of tea is regarded as one of the greatest of our 20th century musical theatre composers. When the stage version of this musical visited Toronto recently it was highly praised and well attended. Magazines and newspapers are filled with descriptive assessments of what plays in the cinemas. Get with it movie going public!!

If you like Johnny Depp (and who doesn't) then seeing this movie isn't an option. I hate musicals and thought this movie was amazing!

Thought that the movie was well done and that once again Tim Burton has made a masterpiece.

We already heard Johnny Depp sing in the Pirate movies, remember? "Yo ho, yo ho a pirates life for me... and really bad eggs." If anyone is considering becoming a vegetarian I would highly recommend this movie as the amount of blood and flesh and body parts and gore would turn even the hardiest meat eater from their t-bone. Ewww! Yucky!

What a horrible and painful movie. Even if you like musicals, you can possibly like the music of this one. No melodies, no rhythm whatsoever, just notes that seem to be put together randomly. It is just painful to the ear. It is visually beautiful as all Tim Burton’s movie, but if you really want to try this one, I would definitely suggest that you go with ear plugs. There are so many composers out there, how this talentless one get through? Terrible, terrible musical...

It was ok... I figure with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton it would be a regular masterpiece... but I was disappointed and the singing... well leaves a lot to be desired.

Although it is rated 18A I wouldn't mind showing it to someone younger. Between the singing and the Oranged Show Blood it becomes almost comical instead of disturbing. The Music was well done. Very entertaining.
