Surprisingly, I liked it. Horrible camera view, though.

I found this gem of a movie accidentally. There it was on DVD sitting on the shelf at the local library. I watched this movie knowing nothing about it except what was written on the dvd cover, I definitely had NO expectations. What I discovered blew me away. One of the best movies I have seen in a while!! Keeps you on your toes, good acting, great storyline... I don't understand why it would get less than a 5 by anyone - but then again I imagine those are the same people that probably loved transformers and the likes. A real gem!!! NOT your run of the mill hollywood blockbuster. Don't let the negative reviews sway you - give it a gander for yourself :)

This movie was great I think personally 2008 has been one of the best years for movies with such classics as Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and so many others. And this movie is one of them I haven't seen a good monster movie like this in a while it's starts out as a just a going away party for a guy named Rob who is going away to Japan for a new job and then boom a huge monster destroys The Statue of Liberty and pretty much most of the city. I think the reason I like this movie is cause I love monster movies and the characters where really entertaining.

This movie was OK... I think that the meaning and scenes of the movie were just amazing but I think this movie would have done WAY better if it was filmed the original way. This movie could have been the talk of every conversation through out the year if not for the lame hand held camera POV. After the film in the theater literally every person said either " Is that it? " or "What, WOW!? " and I was one of them. J. J you could have done WAY better with this movie, you should have known better... I am exited about the next one but if it is filmed this way again, theres no way in hell I'm going to it.

This was a very bad movie -- no story no plot -- and a major rip off of many other movies --- I would have given it zeo out of ten -- Anyone who gave this move a high rating does not deserve to rate movies -- god I feel sick now from watching it ---

Not that great a movie. It would have been much better if they would have included things like where the monster was from and so on in the movie.

I got sick trying to watch this. The camera purposely moves so much that makes it unwatchable.

Before you read all these reviews bash this movie, do your research online. More of the story can be found online on websites that look real, but are actually part of the movie. They give you hints and secrets about the story, and reveal why the main character is going to japan, and where the monster came from. Anyone who gave an opinion about this film and has not figured this stuff out yet is not smart as they think. To start, go to google and type in SLUSHO or CLOVERFIELD CLUES.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] We rented Cloverfield and really dug it. I wanted to see it in theaters but the poor reviews veered me away. Goes to show you can't trust other peoples' opinions. I can see what people are complaining about with the jerky camera action but that's the point here. The characters are young and not very deep but I like that they're reflecting a generation/culture. It is a perspective as good as any other and realistic because it's like what the average person might experience. The creatures looked great and the plot & direction beat a lot of high budget movies. The suspense is very well created even if some of the situations are pretty dumb (the whole cross-town rescue and the inclined building -oh and the girlfriend who was impaled and nearly dead getting up to sprint for her life) The movie's pace is like a bad dream where things don't necessarily make sense but the rush is super intense. Solid movie.

Original filming, and had the potential to be a much better movie if not for the dull characters and the plot that seems like a work of a high school student. Cheesy, meaningless and boring.

2008 is looking promising so far. Even this early, a completely original monster movie has graced theaters, and that is Cloverfield. The handheld camerawork is brilliant and unique, and thus is the best part of the movie. The plot was great, the action was engaging, even if you didn't want it to be (because the cameraman certainly did) The monster was interesting; not terrifying, but interesting, and completely original, which is a plus. All the characters are unknowns, which makes it seem like a real tape filmed by real New Yorkers during a real disaster, without the F-bomb. The search for Beth subplot got a bit too conveniently dramatic near the end of it, in my opinion, but the director made up for that with the fantastically creepy ending, which leaves you thinking. Keep the original movies coming, 2008; this was one good monster movie.

Kind of a joke in the sense that it copies the idea of the Jabberwocky, which was a Monty Python film that was more or less banned in North America because it was satire with 'teeth'. I think Cloverfield is a film that you get free on Blue Ray of you buy a million dollar home. Younger people will identify with it because the cast is all younger people. It is classified as SF, but it essentially is just a cheap CGI horror movie with no SF in it whatsoever, except the vague idea that the monster came from space, when it could have just as easily come from the ocean more likely. Dumb movie.

For the sheer entertainment value I give this a 9... it's a mix between The Blair Witch Project and War of the Worlds... if you liked either film you will like this one.

Well, the worst movie ever possible out all the movies I have watched. The camera was too shaky gave me motion sickness, stupid story line, and... just stupid story line. But acting is ok.

This movie was fantastic! The way it was made just made the movie feel totally real, as if it was an actual account of what happened. I enjoyed every minute of the experience and I hope that they make more movies with this incredibly immersive style. Go see it!

Very artistic and suspenseful, a lot of fun! One could whine about the originality of the camera use, but then, I don't think this one was intended for weak-bellied-wussies!

I liked this movie but I barely could sit through it, with the camera movie and bouncing all over, I realize that is the point of the movie that they are taping it but common they could make it a little less shaky so you could actually see whats going on but I would probably see I again.

Amazing movie. Everyone in the theatre when I saw it was pissed about the ending, saying it was pointless and needed more, but what were you really expecting? It would've been 10x lamer if it went on anymore then what was on the tape. And the motion sickness, it only makes it even more realistic, the guy filming wouldn't have been on a rolling filming... chair... thing. (sorry I have no idea what there called) but if you liked the blair witch & alien, yeah go see it.

Excellent film. The negative reviews given are likely by those who are on the edge of their seat waiting for the newest 'Indiana Jones' film to come out, or a sequel to 'Transformers', 'Harry Potter' etc. etc. ! LOL! Stick to your 'hollywood blockbusters' and the lame epics I'm sure you all enjoy much more than any deviation from a stagnant industry of remakes and sequels. The reason given as to why not to see this film that I have read are lame and in most cases, totally unwarranted and untrue. Visit film websites and do a little homework before SEEING THE FILM, then only to come here and whining like a 12 year old that you will 'never get that 2 hours back', and 'it made me nauseous'! Comments about 'lack of character development', etc. are totally bogus. That's all the film is about! And you don't need to see the creature throughout the entire film. It's done well in that you see it when it needs to be seen. And how many of you stuck around AFTER the end credits to see what happened? Very few from here I gather.

I was surprised I got used to that POV angle, but it does add alot to the movie. I'm not a sci-fi fan usually but this one I can recommend to friends. There are no big names (that I recognized anyway) but the actors fit their roles well, and quickly you are feeling their bewilderment & horror. This movie gives the audience credit for having some brains; not like Godzilla, where they want you to 'understand' every freakin' thing about the origin, the capabilities, blah, blah, blah of the monster. Nope, not Cloverfield. You got questions, good luck finding answers, buddy.

I didn't like it, I thought it was probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. When we went it was a sold out show and almost the whole theater hated that movie. I wouldn't tell anyone to go and see this movie, but it seems that some liked it so I guess it is all up to you.

Despite shaky camera filming not a bad film overall. Tension is created by just giving "peeps" of the creature for the longest time. Very much like 28 Days Later. Similar types of endings.

I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I nothing-ed it. The storyline was vague and forgotten, because all you can do is look at the very bad hand held camera... THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MOVIE. I kept waiting for the hand held camera to stop after the party at the beginning, but it didn't. Worse than the hand-held camera in the Blair Witch. My boyfriend has very bad motion sickness and the poor guy got sick. I got a bad headache! I could've held the camera more steady with my digital camera. I guess it's an artistic choice, but for me... nah-uh! Sorry.

Blair Witch Project meets The Day After Tomorrow with a bit of 8 Legged Freaks sprinkled in. I liked the story's point of view. You discover things as the main characters do, instead of spoon fed all kinds of explanations and theories.
