Had no understanding of language. However, subtitle was helpful. The political history at the beginning was a bit confusing but more understanding followed into the movie. Individual combat actions was very thrilling. Romance was captivating. Excellent movie! Highly recommended. Thoroughly enjoyed with friends. Love the music too!

This movie is an outstanding portrayal of honour, courage and integrity through the person of Akbar. It also shows a powerful depiction of love; it inspires hope that love can overcome all obstacles.

I don't often watch bollywood movies, but every once in a while a movie comes along that tempts me. This one actually tempted me enough to go see it in the theatre. Sadly I was very disappointed. It felt like a movie over three hours long. By the end I didn't even care what was going to happen, I just wanted it to end! The battle scenes are decent, the set is pretty nice. The acting is okay as well. Where this movie falls apart is plot. Nothing happens for about 2 hours. Literally nothing except for an alternating moody/angry HR and a defiant Ash talking, and talking and talking. Seriously you could have made this an hour and half movie and it would have been much better. As it stands however, if you really want to watch it rent it and keep the fwd button on the remote close by.

Loved this film... beautiful story , historic , actors at their best... hritik specially , Sonu Sood... Aishwarya... all of them... music is great... dances are impressive... and next time i go to amber fort , ill feel it even more... :-)

Visually spectacular. Very simple love story, stretched to 7 hours (felt that long) very boring. Hrithik does this psycho dance under the stars in "khwaja mere khwaja"... oooh god... what were you thinking? Ash sucks... stop the sword fight please. Disappointed in ashutosh gowarikar after such masterpieces like lagaan & swades. Tooo much money on set & costume design, no effort on acting or story at all. [...]

I don't watch many bollywood movies, and I am not really a fan of Roshan or rai, but I am thrilled to see that bollywood has the ability to present a masterpiece such as this. It definitely catches the spirit of that period and Akbar. It lets the viewer vividly dream of what it would have been like to live in that era. Go see it. Bollywood should make more of these tales.
| 10/10 | humse@ - first review 3.10.2008 - age: 26-35 |
The movie was definitely too long - though almost expected for a Hindi movie. The fight scenes were drawn out and really I laughed. IF the movie were compressed to 2ish hours I would have given it a 9.5.

Beautiful. If you are one of those people who love to see what people are wearing in the movie this is one that you will enjoy! Aishwarya changes there outfit about 7 times! Sooo pretty! Aish just matches this movie! It is more than 3 hours long but so much happens in that time that you won't get bored!!! Amazing, definitely worth watching at the movie theatre! I even watched it again!
| 10/10 | samihareza@ - first review 3.3.2008 - age: 18-25 |
3 hours for this story line is so not valid. The plot has no quality whatsoever to support this kind of length in a movie. Very weak. The production caught up this loss in scenery and costumes that were very pretty and elaborate. But thats all there is. LITERALLY.

Mixture of somany stories. Director named the movie jodha akber, I think confused akber is the perfect name. The king who ruled india for 50 years he act like a cheap indian hero who try to impress his queen by showing his body and cheap actions. That is not a real story of king akber. Specially when u watch wedding night scene. I think 1000 times I have seen this kind of scene in indian movie. Music is good, best cinematography and acters did gr8 job.

It's a good film, I was impressed with the sets and locations. Definitely an effort was made to make everything look perfect. Hrithik did an excellent job portraying Akbar, his emotions and personality shined throughout the movie. Aishwarya was alright, her role is not as long, but she did a good job. It's a interesting film to learn more about the historical times of India, the director's attempt was well done. Definitely the sets, jewellery, costumes stand out and create a visual treat. It's a good movie that is portrayed well, watch it with your family.

I think that the movie was very good for a bollywood movie. They could have done the action scene much more better but still pretty good and Hrithik Roshan was perfect for this role.
| 10/10 | ahmed_raza2k@ - first review 2.26.2008 - age: 18-25 |
The movie was too long, the only point of the movie was to show the first muslim-hindu marriage. And why does Aish never let her husband touch her in movies (LOL) Anyways all the fight scenes were a drag, more laughable then anything.

I thought the movie was great. I think that Ash and Hrithik did there roles perfectly, the jewellery, costume, and sets were wow amazing. I was very much confused because of the mix reviews I was hearing but I am very much glad that I watch it, didn't really understand the language but its ok... oh there is this one song I think sang my Sonu nigam its cute song.

There's a great tale to be told in Jodhaa Akbar. Trouble is that it is buried in 90 extra minutes of pure boredom. I felt like I should take up film editing as a profession while watching this movie. The performances were ok, but nothing outstanding other than Ila Arun. The heroes of the movie are the technicians, especially courtesy the set designs, costumes and background music. Gowariker needs to learn that longer movies do not always make better movies. Sometimes more is less!

A very beautiful movie. Worth your money and time. Definitely a Master Piece. I am so happy I went to see it. The subtitles were well balance not overwhelming. I LOVE IT, I AM GOING AGAIN.. give your self an opportunity to see a good movie. ;-)
| 10/10 | escarletvanessa@ - first review 2.23.2008 - age: 36-49 |
The movie in my opinion had a fire in the beginning which it then tries to put out with intricately designed origami firemen. Beautiful yet pointless. As far as the plot goes, it was like the directors made a suggestion box on the set and tried to incorporate every single one they received. Ended up looking like the Mazda RX-8. Not ugly, but very messy. Aishwarya's performance, if mildly put was poor. Hrithik did a good job with what they gave him. And to all you readers who want to fight elephants. If u jump on its back, its just going to roll on the ground and crush you. Unarmed, it is impossible for a man to subdue an elephant. I come from a highly elephanty part of India so I know.

I loved it. I had the chance to go to India recently and I visited the locations we see in the movie (Ajmer and Agra) It was amazing to go back in time and see these same places on-screen in all the splendor of the 16th century. Wonderful performances by Hrithik and Aishwarya.

The most beautiful lead pair, gorgeous costumes, brilliant cinematography, excellent songs picturization and lavish sets. So where does it go wrong you ask? Screenplay, the key ingredient in any movie... and there is not much of it here. When a long movie seems a bit too long, it's not a good thing. Not that there wasn't room to make the movie more interesting... especially with all the unfortunate looking Kings ready to take over the throne at any given opportunity. None of the evil ploys were too evil or intelligently executed... everything going wrong was fixed the next minute just too easily. When you make a love story in times of wars and foreign invasions, you got to make it much harder to taste the victory. In short, Gowarikar lost a grand opportunity to recapture the hearts of his fans who waited for another Lagaan. Well may be another time.

I had really high expectations going in however I was very disappointed with the movie. Only good things going for it is Hrithik, the costumes, the sets and locations. The storyline's very very weak to support a 3.20 hrs epic. Aishwarya looked really old in most of her scenes, baggy eyes, poor acting. A. R. Rehman's music disappointed me for the first time. During the movie I always felt the director or writers need to be politically correct (towards hindus/muslims) regardless of staying true to history. Overall it's just another bollywood movie with big stars, big budget, great sets and costumes and lack of everything else.

Music, Choreography, and acting is mind blowing. War scenes are outstanding. One MUST watch this movie in theatre to enjoy every bit. Yes, bit lengthy. Can be negative point for audience, but I didn't mind the longer run of the movie.

Every emotion that hritik showed was right on the mark... I like that their love story bloomed later it showed a lot up to that moment... I like the way ash held back and held onto her religion and hritik respected and accepted that.

An extravagant and ethereal movie. Hrithik's has gone way and beyond, terrific performance, very good homework by him ( but his general emotional personality sort of made Akbar's personality a little soft ) As usual Aish gave her best in the crying scenes, somehow, she could not carry herself very well as a rajput princess, But overall, she was a good match for Hrithik compared to any other bollywood lady. By the way, she looked gorgeouzzz. Khwaja-ji was the most well-suited with Rahman's voice floating through the air. Disappointing that melifluous Jashn-e-bahaara was not in the main movie, but guess that was welcome to help cut short the looongg movie. As somebody pointed out, not much of a flow in the movie, Guess Ashutosh was torn between giving the movie its due for the romance and Akbar's empire details. All his research was not wasted anywhere ;) This surely was a great history refresher, a very alive and beautiful one (unlike the history classes which came right after lunch break :)) )

Wonderful historical/period film, with excellent cinematography. Even if the historical accuracy is debatable, with some fiction inserted by scriptwriters, you can still enjoy the whole package. Wholesome family entertainment. The star of show is definitely Hrithik, couldn't imagine anyone else in this role! Aish and the rest of the cast were ok.

Usually I get sooo frustrated with the length of hindi movies... even though it was 3+ hours long I still didn't realize it coz it's such an amazing movie! Hrithik did an awesome job... holly cow! I don't think anyone else can pull the character of akbar like Hrithik did! brilliant!
| 9/10 | sabrina_bruin@ - 23 reviews 2.20.2008 - age: 18-25 |
Excellent direction and a top notch performance by Hrithik make this movie a worthy watch. Although it may not be the true potrayel of histrical facts but still it's a special treat for cenima lovers... There are some intresting sequences and two excellent songs in "Jasne baharan" and "azeemoshan shehansha" which make the experience more interesting. The only flaw is the prolonged scenes and the missing flow that a movie should have... there are scenes which just seem forced or anti the flow of the movie. Apart from that it's a gem! The song Jashne Baharan lingers in your mind as you leave the theatre and the magnificent canvas will be remembered for a long long time... Hrithik steals the show!!!

I would like applaud Ashutosh for making this amazing movie. Hrithik and Ash were perfect and did full justice to the role. Nobody could have done it better than this two. The costume and jewelery is out of the world. It is a long movie, however did not realise it at all. Every single character in the movie has put their best. The least we can do to show our appreciation is by watching the movie in the theatre. I think everybody should go to watch this movie.

It's an excellent movie to watch if only you can appreciate the historical nature of the movie. It was a bit long, but the story itself and the way Akbar was portrayed was beyond what I imagined. I didn't know that Bollywood could make movies like this!

One word for this movie: EPIC. The detailing made it worth watching!! Although the historical events needed more detailing... as in there was only one event shown in the movie and it focused more on jalal's married life... I wish I cud see more history in the movie... but it was excellent! Hrithik n aish did a great job... and the songs were great as well.

Absolutely a masterpiece and worth every penny! 2 thumbs up for writer, Haidar Ali and director, Ashutosh Gowariker. Hrithik undoubtedly was flawless. I cannot imagine any other actor doing this role. Ash was just as impressive. The cinematography, colours and costumes were outstanding! That's why this movie must be seen on a big screen. It's one of the most visually stunning films I’ve seen. Although the movie is over 3 hours, you don't really feel the length of it because the story flowed well. Music by AR Rehman is soulful and timely throughout the movie. I bought the music CD the very next day after watching the movie. I cannot wait to buy the DVD when it comes out. Cannot imagine any other Hindi film topping this one in 2008. If you appreciate good cinema, don't miss the experience of this mesmerizing film.

Interesting to watch how a skinny girl gave most powerful ruler, hard time. Beautiful love story. Flaws. Fights looked fake even after having so many people as soldiers. Girl "jodha" should practice for few days for a sword fight, She rather looked dancing while she was having fights with the king. Ratek Roshan's action ws fine, but again he did sound like he was about to cry every time he was doing an emotional scene. (like he always does) At time movie was funny. As A whole I had good time watching it.
