I don't know much about Bob Dyan, which probably would have been a big help while watching this movie. However, Cate Blanchette was amazing, I just loved her scenes. She gets 10/10.

I am not a Dylan fan nor did I know much about the man, but critics were good to this film so... I read Wikipedia on Bob Dylan before going and it proved very useful in understanding much about the movie and Dylan's life. It is very well played; yes by Cate Blanchett, but I thought more so by Charlotte Gainsbourg. People seem to see Dylan as an enigmatic person, but I don’t. I've seen more complex people in every day life. So, he changes, who doesn't? Anyhow, get somewhat informed about the man before viewing does help. The 2h16 went by extremely fast! Worth anywhere between 7½ and 8.

Not your typical Hollywood movie, a little artsy, it helps if you know a little about the Bob Dylan's life. The guys I went with did not and where amusingly confused. Worth seeing however it is also pretty long so don't get the large soda. Then again it is slow, so you probably wont miss to much if you get up to use the w/c. Oh ya Kate Blanchett was outstanding... she alone was worth the $$$.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
This movie was great fun to watch and a pleasure to see unfold in all its twists and turns. Three things should be remembered, however, when seeing it. One, this film is based loosely on the life of Bob Dylan, his songs and as the film maker says," his incarnations." This is important because one could very easily lose the sense and drive of the story or stories. Two it helps to be a fan of the man and his music, because anyone coming into it without those signposts to guide them is going to get lost from the beginning. I'm a fan, but even some elements escaped me at first, and left me scratching my head and wondering WTF. Three this film is the filmmaker's take on Mr. Robert Allen Zimmerman and though it's fairly true to life, some aspects are played up at the expense of others being played down. All of those quibbles aside, I have seen this film once and probably plan on seeing it a few more times because it's very much like a Bob Dylan album or song, you don't get it at once. You need to listen to it a few more times before the beauty and magic become apparent and real. This film is highly recommended!!!

This is a hard one to rate. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but I've always been a Dylan fan. That I think, is the key. The different aspects of Dylan's personality and career personified by different characters played by different actors, all made sense to me. My wife got little out of it. It was interesting and entertaining for me. Hearing Dylan's music in the context of the movie, I saw whole new colours and meanings in songs that I have listened to hundreds of times. And there was the nostalga factor -- he was so young at that time and so was I. If you know Dylan's music go see this movie.

I hated this movie. It's ALL artsy, it had no entertainment value at all!!! There were a few moments, here and there, that were pretty or creative, but it kept on feeling like it was ending, so I stayed, and I stayed, and I stayed. By the time I thought it was almost over, I thought I would just stay until the end, and I waited, and I waited, and I waited!!! It really was one of those times where you say to yourself," I'll never get that time back." If you love movies, and want to be entertained, believe me, it's not worth the two hours of complete boredom, never-ending dissatisfaction, and the feeling of ants-in-your-pants when you think it's time to get ready to go!!!

Irreverencieux. Folk. Rock? Revolte et prisonnier. Degoulinant d'americanisme. Anticonventionnel. Trimardeur et limousine... ballad en 60. Rock en 70... mais depuis? Judas? Prophete? Et dollars... dylan is dylan and not another thing.

This was an amazing movie. But be warned, if you don't know Bob Dylan well, you better brush up. Some people even though they didn't know Bob Dylan too well they knew what was going on, and that good. But there are soo many people b****ing about how confusing it was. If you think it was confusing, you have not fully understood the movie. It is a beautifully made movie. I'm Not There is a good example of movies being a form of art.

This movie is gorgeous; I don't understand why there wasn't any real marketing for it... Cate Blanchett makes you fall in love with her (him?)

Cate was great. The Richard Gere sequences were just dumb. Generally, I got the impression the director was trying way too hard to be "experimental" or... something.

I'm a big Dylan fan and the only reason I didn't leave disappointed was because of the Cate Blanchett version of Bob and her supporting cast. She was absolutely brilliant in her portrayal of his attitude and posture as well as be tremendously amusing in her delivery of one-liners. I almost forgot that she was a woman. It also helps that she was casted for what I believe is the most interesting part of his career but I wont spoil those scenes for you with more details. I mention the supporting cast as well since they really fed into his attitude of the time effectively, especially the journalist. Otherwise the movie was pretty rough around the edges and for anyone who doesn't know much about Dylan, it will just seem completely foreign and ridiculous. I was able to catch onto most of the different plots yet some left me quite baffled, which makes sense because Dylan is a dinosaur and he's been through so much and even if you've read Chronicles and seen No Direction Home, unless you're a bit older, you wont get everything like say my dad my get (having followed him for decades in the news) Lastly, the cinematography was good all-around but really stood out best for Blanchett's sequence. Maybe a film student would think differently but I liked the alternating use of monochrome and color.

Dylan never wanted to be understood. He was singing poetry, talking poetry and breathing poetry. Dylan was insecure and secure. Dylan was confused and shy. Dylan was sitting on top of the world and at the bottom of the barrel. Dylan was brief and sporadic. Dylan was fake and real. Dylan was arty and organic. Dylan was glamourus and down to earth. Dylan was frustrated and satisfied. Dylan was unsatisfied. This is how this movie goes, it's impossible to put your finger on what the guy is, really. Todd Haynes achieved something brilliant here by telling, in a really artistic way, the story of a man who was in a constant evolution and devolution. Dylan is, and was a sponge of a bunch of generations and this movie shows exactly what was happening in Dylan's head. A mish mash of non-sence, a prisoner of his own art. And a slave of a free counter culture. Don't try to understand this movie. Just let your senses deal with it as though you were watching an abstract painting.

AMAZING! I won't pretend that I understood everything but it was a fantastic ride. I never wanted it to end. It was a whole different kind of cinema, one that I'd never experienced before. It felt like poetry, with its beautiful images combined with the music, the script. The editing was incredible and the performances perfect. Cate Blanchett is magic, pushing the boundaries on acting. All in all, a masterpiece that brings us to the core of what cinema should be. Perfection!

Screenwriter's premise: "Hmm, Dylan had many sides. Let's show each side with a different actor portraying." Unfortunately, the end result is artsy yet disjointed - with little opportunity for the audience to get emotionally involved. Might be better to wait and rent the DVD to see some rainy afternoon. Warning: if you see it at night, you might not make it through.

A rich, intelligently constructed movie that pays graceful tribute to Dylan. It is somewhat in the vein of Masked and Anonymous (Dylan's film) It's not that level of masterpiece, but I thought Todd Haynes got many things just right. The audience applauded.

Just for Cate Blanchett, this movie is worth seeing. She does a "tour de force". I like this way to pass from one actor to the other to describe Dylan's live. This is an art movie. A pleasure.

Anyone familiar with Dylan's career will enjoy this movie. I am a lifetime Dylan fan and I thought the movie was excellent. Todd Haynes captures Dylan's enigmatic personality beautifully, this film is obviously a labour of love for him. The acting is stellar, with Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett delivering first rate performances.

I must applaud Todd Haynes for having the audacious to make such an unconventional biopic, unfortunately to becomes to self-indulgent in his art-school pretensions and forgot to tell a story. This film is nothing more than a collection of random scenes with no arc that presents nothing but a confusing mess to someone who isn't already an expert in Dylan's and/or work. Saying that the film presents us with strong performances for Blanchett, Bale, Ledger and especially Charlotte Gainsbourg whose character was the only one successful enough to evoke an emotional response from me.

Very interesting artistic approach and interpretation/reflection of different stages of Dylan's life. Well done, just way too long. Otherwise I would have given it an eight. Excellent performance by Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale.

Not for those who get confused by experimental ideas. The film brilliantly conveys different aspects of Dylan's life and work, interpreted by some of today's most fearless actors. Cate Blanchett shines as she eerily takes on one aspect of Dylan's persona. Christian Bale is equally impressive. And an unknown teenage African-American actor gives an outstanding performance as well. The director, Todd Haynes (who also directed the superb Far From Heaven and Safe), knows no constrictions as he pays no mind to gender, race, or age in the various depictions of Bob Dylan to create a fascinating pastiche of the great icon's life and work. The film is confusing at times, what with the different phases of Dylan's life weaving in and out, and the different actors portraying different facets of his persona, but overall it's highly enjoyable--and there's also the terrific music!
