It was good and funny. Great performances by the lead actors.

I really enjoyed this movie. Perhaps it's because I like dysfunctional-family movies because it makes my life look normal! However, the acting was good and there were moments when I laughed and cried and that's all that I ask out of a movie. It really made me think too. If you're into a good drama, get this one.

I would not recommend this film. This movie should not be billed as a comedy, there is no comedy. Instead it is depressing and very slow. The plot was basic and seemed to be missing something. The film does address an important issue, but not in an effective way.

One of the best family dramas I've ever seen (possibly the best, far better than Squid and the Whale) The lead performances are Sooo good! I have a sister and I totally get Linney and Hoffman's interactions. Terrific. I didn't find it as funny as others but I really appreciated the drama of the film. Dealing the old age and such. Most definitely recommended.

I sometimes wish Laura Linney would play her socially neurotic women with a slightly deeper third dimension to them. Nonetheless, this is an emotionally deftly controlled movie (by the pacing in the editing) and two very fine performances from Laura and especially Phillip S-H who nails the tenor of his character so well. Tough in parts, depending on your own personal familial experience, but rewarding in its honest portrait.

I was disappointed. It was long and slow, yes there was some good acting and yes some parts of the script were quite clever, unfortunately as a package it was just ok.

A good comedy on a difficult subject matter. Linney & Hoffman play off well together. At times cute, funny, tragic and sensitive. Worth 7½ or 8.

Good acting, a thoughtful film, which makes you think about life and death and aging parents.

The reason I went to see the movie it because Laura Linney recent Oscar nomination. The subject matter seem intriguing. But I didn't felt the connection with the actors. It not there performance was bad, I just thought it was average (you couldn't get better actors in Hoofman and Linney) even if they play complexe individuals with deep emotional problem. I just couldn't figure out what they were that trouble by looking at their father. Ok they had a different childhood but come one we've seen and hear worst story. Personally I was more move by 'Away from Her' than this movie.

This movie provided a good insight into problems connected with aging parents and was a good study of familial relationships. The script could have been better in my opionion and was cluttered with the love interests of both main characters. They could have been spoken of and discussed but showing them detracted from the main story and did not really add anything to it. Great performance from Phillip Seymour Hoffman as usual.

One of the funniest/wittiest movies I've seen in a long time. I also fell in love with each character in the movie. Great story and tearjerker as well.

Jason Bourne, Shrek, Harry Potter, Pirates and even The Terminator. If ever I saw a film that demanded a followup, this is it. The circumstances of these two people, beautifully played by Ms. Linney and Mr. Hoffman, may not be common but the angst is. Where do they go from here?

I would not recommend this film. It was dark, depressing and very slow. The plot was basic and seemed to be missing something. The film does address an important issue, but not in a particularly entertaining way.

Linney and Hoffman are superb as dysfunctional siblings. The subject matter should make this movie a downer but the quiet humour manages to leaven the mood throughout. My only real criticism is the title. What a way to make a bad first impression.

This movie was almost to 'real' for some viewers. It's not candy coated in any way. We have a neurotic pill-popping guilt-ridden sister played with full promise by Laura Linney (when will this woman win an Academy Award) The family dynmics are very honest and complex. There is a lot that is not said in this film which only makes it more powerful. The acting is nothing less than perfect. To cast Laura Linney with Seymour Hoffman as siblings was brilliant! Very thought provoking movie and for some of us, almost too real!

You wouldn't expect a movie called The Savages to be gentle and it certainly isn't. It shines a light on the dark, painful corners of life and reflects them back to us with unflinchingly brutal clarity. Playing brother and sister, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney give the brilliant, magnificent performances that have come to be expected of them. It's a pleasure to watch two of the best actors of our time working together. The expression of inner feelings is often communicated wordlessly. This silent emoting is demanded even more from Philip Bosco, who plays their father. His complex character is given to bouts of belligerent rage and mournful moments of helpless lucidity. It is an acting tour de force from the three leads. The films' stark realism is peppered with occasional moments of wit and dry humour. Linney and Hoffman's characters are barely able to cope with their own lives, but find themselves faced with one of life's cruelest moments when their estranged father succumbs to Parkinson's dementia. Having been deprived of a proper role model growing up, they stumble in their attempts to rise to the occasion. But the experience makes them stronger, more able to face their everyday lives with maturity and courage and with a keen awareness of the preciousness of life, right up to its very end.
