Princess Ann feels caged by her regimental schedule on a tour of Europe so one night in Rome, she escapes from her suffocating entourage. She hides in the back of a lorry and gets out at the beach, however a sedative which she had been given begins to take effect. She is found in the same place by an American journalist who is covering her trip, but doesn't recognise her. When he discovers that the woman he brought back to his apartment is the princess, his ambition in work meets an unexpected obstacle in the shape of his developing love for the princess.
