You're not familiar with Bill Maher's work, are you? Perhaps if you'd seen a trailer before seeing the film you'd have had a better understanding of what to expect. This is the same director as Borat, by the way, which also should have told you something. Religulous never put itself in the same league as National Geographic. The object was to demonstrate, by simply filming religionists talking about their beliefs, how patently silly religious belief, dogma and faith are. By selecting articulate, knowledgeable representatives of several different religions and asking perfectly obvious questions, Maher does a brilliant job of allowing religionists to hang themselves with their own dogma. Ignorant? Hardly. Manipulative? How can you say that? He simply let people talk and rolled film. He didn't tell them what to say. Full of rhetoric? Yes, but it's the religionists who are spouting it. Self-serving? Of course, but the point of this very important movie was to illustrate how stupid and dangerous religion is.
